My Media Adventures

Trying to compile a list of all the media I have experienced.

Disclaimer: I don't condone or like every single thing on this list, the power of Autism just compels me to start keeping track of my art/media habits because it is distressing to me when I forget the title of something I read or watched. I thought it would be a fun idea to share it, but this is not a recomendations list. As you read through this list you may understand why I feel the need to say this.

- Get Out (2017)

- Hex (2017) : Almost nothing happens in this movie and yet I came away from it feeling dirty.

- Hereditary (2018) : Peter is one of my fave horror characters and I really enjoyed this movie but I have. Criticism. Of Ari Aster's writing.

Thriller & Mystery

- Thunderheart (1992)

- Gone Girl (2014) : A deeply evil yet well-made movie. Absolutely unbearable in the wake of the anti-MeToo backlash and the Depp v Heard trial. My full review here.

Action

- Mad Max (1979) : Thought it was fascist garbage. I'm sorry. It's literally about a hero cop fighting to "maintain order" against an oncoming wave of bisexual rapists coming to tear apart the nuclear family and destroy society. After watching it I was so annoyed that I dug around on the internet until I found someone who agreed with me (a blog post by a gay dude) so I could experience the relief of knowing that someone else sees what I see. In the process I also found conservative blog which saw these same themes but agreed with them, which made me want to bleed from my eyes.

Politics

- A Return to Modesty: Discovering the Lost Virtue by Wendy Shalit : Read it when I was younger at the recommendation of a more conservative family member.

Anarchism

Feminism

- Pro-Life Feminism: Different Voices edited by Gail-Grenier Sweet : Read it when I was younger at the recommendation of a more conservative family member. This is a bit of a weird book. Its main argument is that abortion allows men to use women as sex objects without consequences, referencing the classic "paying for the abortion to avoid a sex scandal" scenario. It also uses the classic "abortion traumatizes women" argument, invoking stories of women haunted by the children they aborted. Unlike your standard conservatives, they also argue for government welfare to pay for all these kids. That said, the strangest and most revealing essay is the one on suicide, arguing that "the mind has no right to kill the body" because the body's reflexes may thwart a suicide attempt. In this way, they state out loud the usually more implicit total rejection of bodily autonomy as a concept. Rather than the body as a vessel of one's consciousness, they argue, in effect, that you are required to be a caretaker of your body, helping it to fulfill it's "natural purpose". The body wants to live, wants to have children, wants to not have an abortion, because these things are natural and spiritually right. Your responsibility is to comply with these biological imperatives. Usually conservatives argue on the basis that abortion is murder and against the "clump of cells" argument, ignoring the bodily autonomy discussion entirely. It's fascinating to see someone argue against abortion by trying to argue against bodily autonomy as a concept. I wonder what these women would think about trans people. I think I already know.

- The Beauty Myth: How Images of Beauty Are Used Against Women by Naomi Wolf : A mixture of very valid criticisms of a very big industry and some deeply weird arguements. She's right that the beauty industry is bad, but I can see how she ended up becoming a conspiracy theorist.

- Last Days At Hot Slit: The Radical Feminism of Andrea Dworkin edited by Johanna Fateman and Amy Scholder : Absolutely grueling. Incredibly difficult. I have my criticisms of Dworkin, but she has some deeply insightful writing. Most disturbing is a part near the end, near her death, facing the new reality of a world with date-rape drugs. Her writing on that, on the absolute necrophilia of men's sexual objection of and sexual violence against women, will haunt me.

Folklore

"True Believer" Occult, Folklore, and Religion Books

- American Monsters: A History of Monster Lore, Legends, and Sightings in America by Linda S. Godfrey : A fascinating look into the world of cryptozoology, but full of hippie-style anti-indigenous racism.

Dystopian

- The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins

Fantasy

- The Harry Potter Series by J K Rowling : This was the first proper book series I ever read by myself as a child. I did not notice or barely noticed the problems with it because it was my first time reading myself a chapter book. I grew up surrounded by a more conservative evangelical culture but not fully a part of it, and that culture was opposed to the Harry Potter series for being "anti-Christian." My family was cooler and more chill than the broader culture of evangelicalism. Of course, the Harry Potter series is actually quite conservative and quite christian, just in a sort of centrist lib kind of way. J K Rowling is, well, who she is. It wasn't really that outside the culture after all. I've frequently found myself realizing that a lot of the issues I see present in the religious culture I've tried to avoid are, in fact, present all around, even in places that are supposedly cooler, more chill, and more progressive. There is no real dichotomy between the weird, repressive, conservative religious culture and the cooler, more progressive, more liberated rest of society, it's all just facets of the same structures, spewing different flavors of the same bullshit. It makes me feel a lot of grief.
